How Vehicle Sales Tax Works in Ontario
In Ontario, purchases of new and used vehicles from registered motor vehicle dealers are subject to a single 13% Harmonized Sales Tax (HST), combining the 5% federal GST and 8% provincial component. The tax is calculated on the net selling price after deducting trade-in equity, but before adding license transfer and documentation fees.
OMVIC All-In Price Advertising Protection
Under Ontario law enforced by the Ontario Motor Vehicle Industry Council (OMVIC), registered dealers must advertise all-inclusive prices. The advertised price must include all fees (freight, PDI, documentation fees, and environmental levies). Only HST and licensing fees may be added on top of the advertised price.
Trade-In Tax Credit Benefit in Ontario
When trading in a vehicle against a new purchase at a registered dealership, you only pay 13% HST on the net difference. For example, if you buy a $40,000 car and receive $10,000 trade-in credit, HST is calculated on $30,000, saving you $1,300 in sales tax.
